Asking for Price and Directions
At the beginner level, you do not need long conversations.
What you need are a few short expressions that unlock real situations.
Two of the most useful are:
- asking the price
- asking where something is
These are practical, repeatable, and immediately useful in daily life.

1. Asking the price
One of the first things many beginners want to say is:
多少钱?
How much is it?
This is one of the most useful survival phrases in Mandarin.
You can use it in markets, small shops, casual stores, and many everyday buying situations.
It is short, direct, and very practical.
If you are pointing at something, you can say:
这个多少钱?
How much is this?
This is even more useful because it connects the question to a specific object.
If you only remember one shopping question, remember this one.
2. A softer version
If you want to sound a little more polite, you can add:
请问,这个多少钱?
Excuse me, how much is this?
The word 请问 adds politeness and makes the question feel softer.
You do not always need it, but it is good to recognize and use.
3. Asking where something is
Another key beginner need is direction.
A very useful word here is:
在哪儿?
Where is it?
This is simple and powerful.
You can use it with a place or object:
厕所在哪儿?
Where is the bathroom?
地铁站在哪儿?
Where is the metro station?
These are highly practical everyday questions.
4. Asking with 请问
Again, if you want to sound more polite, you can begin with:
请问,厕所在哪儿?
Excuse me, where is the bathroom?
请问,地铁站在哪儿?
Excuse me, where is the metro station?
This is a very useful beginner pattern:
请问 + thing/place + 在哪儿?
Once you understand this pattern, you can use it in many situations.
5. Useful location words to recognize
When asking for directions, you may hear a few common location words.
You do not need to master them yet, but it helps to recognize them.
这里
here
那里
there
前面
in front
后面
behind / in back
左边
left side
右边
right side
Even if you only catch one or two of these words, they can help you understand the answer better.
6. A very simple beginner strategy
When asking for price:
Step 1
Point if needed.
Step 2
Say:
这个多少钱?
When asking for directions:
Step 1
Say the place name.
Step 2
Add:
在哪儿?
If you want to sound more polite, begin with:
请问
That is already enough to survive many beginner situations.
7. Example mini patterns
Price
- 多少钱?
- 这个多少钱?
- 请问,这个多少钱?
Direction
- 厕所在哪儿?
- 地铁站在哪儿?
- 请问,厕所在哪儿?
- 请问,地铁站在哪儿?
These are short, clear, and practical.
That is exactly what beginner Mandarin should feel like.
8. What matters most here
At this stage, your goal is not to understand every answer perfectly.
Your goal is:
- to ask clearly
- to recognize key words
- to stay calm
- to make communication possible
That is already real language use.
Even one short question can open a real interaction.
